"Bela Lugosi's Dead" - Bauhaus

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a gothic rock song written by the band Bauhaus. The song was the band's first single, released in August 1979, and is often considered to be the first gothic rock record released.[1][2] It did not enter the UK charts. The b-side features the song "Boys" and some versions also include an early demo recording of what would be their next single, "Dark Entries." It was released on CD in 1988[3] and was compiled on the 1998 album, Crackle - The Best of Bauhaus. The original sleeve art was taken from a still of the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.[2] The authors listed on the single are David Haskins, Kevin Haskins, Peter Murphy and Daniel Ash [4].

Track listing

1."Bela Lugosi's Dead"

2."Boys"
3."Dark Entries" (demo)

Description

The song is over nine minutes in length and was recorded "live in the studio" in a single take. David J, the band's bassist, claims on his website to have written the lyrics. The singing does not start (in the studio version) until several minutes into the track. The dub-influenced [5] guitar sound was achieved by using partial barre chords and leaving the top E and B strings open.

The title references horror film star Bela Lugosi (1882–1956), who did much to establish the modern vampire image as the title character in the 1931 film Dracula.

Recording session

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" was recorded during a six-hour session at Beck Studios in Wellingborough on 26 January 1979. Four more songs were recorded ("Boys," "Harry," "Dark Entries" and the unreleased "Some Faces") but not used; only "Harry" surfaced in 1982 as a single B-side to "Kick In The Eye."

The song "Boys" was re-recorded at Beck Studios in spring 1979.

Use in film and television

The song was featured in the 1983 Tony Scott cult vampire film The Hunger, with Bauhaus portraying a band in a nightclub, playing it during the opening credits and introduction. A 7" promotional record featuring an edited version of the song was released to theaters playing the film.

It was also played throughout the film Dead Man's Curve/The Curve, and featured in the French film, Sombre. The song is played in the film Good Luck Chuck as an introduction for when the Goth girl is on screen and it is on the soundtrack.

The song was used as the intro music for the late 1990s Saturday Night Live skit "Goth Talk," which had Chris Kattan and Molly Shannon as two goth students. This song was also in an episode in the fifth season of Smallville, the vampire/Halloween-themed "Thirst." The song was also in an episode of One Tree Hill.

The song was featured in an episode ("Midnight") of the science fiction/horror series Fringe which revolved around a vampire-esque creature.[6][7]

Comedian and musician Bill Bailey parodied the song on his DVD Cosmic Jam as part of a medley in which he and his band, the Stan Ellis Experiment performed Cockney Rock style versions of popular songs - this particular segment of the medley included lyrical changes such as "E ad a girl's name."

The song was played almost in its entirety during the horror film The Collector during a scene in which the older daughter was attempting to have sex with her boyfriend before they were both viciously murdered.

The song was played in the opening scene of the Supernatural television series in season 6, episode 5, "Live Free or Twi-Hard." The episode is vampire-themed, poking particular fun at the Twilight film series and its romanticism of vampires.

The intro to the song was played briefly in Eastbound and Down during the last few minutes of season 3, episode 3, "Chapter 16" just before Kenny's friend Shane, Jason Sudeikis, has a heart attack.

Calvary Cemetery is a Roman Catholic cemetery operated by the Los Angeles Archdiocese, located at 4201 Whittier Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It is also called "New Calvary Cemetery" because the original Calvary Cemetery on North Broadway was moved to the present location in 1896 to make way for Cathedral High School.

Tim Carey Intros Columbo to L.A. Morgue Files - GIF

Burt, the short order cook at Columbo's favorite greasy spoon, was played by Timothy Carey.

Timothy Agoglia Carey (born March 11, 1929, Brooklyn, New York – died May 11, 1994, Los Angeles, California) was an American film and television actor.

Carey wrote, produced, directed and starred in the 1962 feature The World's Greatest Sinner which was scored by Frank Zappa. Although it did not have wide commercial release, the film has achieved cult status through repeated screenings at the "midnight movies" in Los Angeles in the 1960s. This movie established Carey as an important figure in independent film.

As an actor, Carey appeared in the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory, and in the John Cassavetes-directed films Minnie and Moskowitz and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

He had roles in East of Eden, The Wild One, One-Eyed Jacks, The Boy and the Pirates and Beach Blanket Bingo. He played a minor role as the Angel of Death in the comedy film D.C. Cab, and appeared in the Monkees vehicle Head. His final appearance was in the 1986 movie Echo Park. Carey also did a select amount of acting on TV from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Carey's image appears behind George Harrison on the cover of the Beatles album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Unfortunately, his cutout is obscured by Harrison. Outtake photos from the "Pepper" session show his full face from the movie "The Killing."

Timothy Carey died from a stroke in 1994, aged 65.

Both Gitta & Poncher Received Flowers Too!

Both Gitta and Poncher Received Flowers Too!

Letter Left at Marilyn Monroe's Crypt 8/5/12

"Dear Marilyn,

It's been 50 years. It's almost impossible to believe.

Dear Marilyn, how sweet you are.

People have come from different parts of the world to be with you this week and this day. You are loved Marilyn.

This night will be hard to sleep, but that is only because I will be thinking of you.

We will be gathering all together these past few days, celebrating your life and legacy. It's brought so many people together.

Oh Marilyn, I know you are here with us today. Writing this is making me feel very emotional, only because I can't (impossible to read...).. you have touched my life in every single way.

There's not a moment I can ever do without having your picture with me. You are so wonderful and I would love to tell you thank you for everything you had done, because you helped me through all my (butterfly in the way)... and have always been there for me, even when no one wasn't.

I love you always Marilyn."
